Content Management Systems
Content Management Systems, or CMS, lie behind many of today's modern websites. All of the website's content is held in a database and specially designed page templates pull the information from the database and display it correctly in the browser.
From the client's perspective this offers a number of advantages:
Content can be entered into the database via a web browser, requiring only the most basic of skills. If the person responsible for this has rudimentary word processing skills, can complete a form and has a basic understanding of file management (e.g. can find, save and retrieve things from My Computer or the OSX Finder) then that's 99% of all that is needed to manage and update a website.
SiteE@se takes care of all the technical design work to create the CMS structure, look and feel and the client takes over to keep the content fresh.
Another distinct advantage of a CMS is that any number of users can be given access rights to edit the site, or a particular part of a site. This means that the workload can be distributed across the organisation with appropriate departments taking responsibility for their content. Importantly, because everything is being updated via a template, a consistent style is maintained right across your website. With a CMS, websites need never go out of date or look 'messy' again.
We support a number of CMS systems, Open Source (see below) and commercial. Only after we have discussed requirements with a client will we make a recommendation as to the best one to use, as each can offer a range of different features.
Full remote training and support is offered and, if required, we can provide on-site training for staff to ensure that they are fully conversant with its operation.
What is 'Open Source'?
This is software for which the underlying programming code is freely available to users so that they may read it, make changes to it, and build new versions of the software incorporating their changes. This has the advantage that often there are thousands of programmers contributing to the development of a piece of software, meaning that improvements can be implemented very swiftly. It also means that it can be fine tuned to the needs of individual clients by SiteE@se.
